Hi and welcome!
My name is Juan Felix. I live in Amersfoort (Netherlands) with my wife and two beautiful children. I’m first and foremost a working dad. I’m always looking for the right balance between work and family. That’s partly why I started my business three years ago from now.
I got my Masters Degree in Social Science from the University of Amsterdam in 1995 and started to work right away as marketing researcher. For over 15 years I have supported marketers from various companies –ranging from b2b to b2c in many fields like automotive, media, insurance, fast-moving consumer goods and health care- with building a loyal base of clients / customers to sustain a healthy business for the long term. Working as a marketing researcher with marketers of various industries, I have grown a deep understanding of how to nurture valuable customer relationships.
Based on my drive to be my boss and develop my own ideas, I decided to start my marketing business in 2010: Felix Relationship Marketing. I came up with the name for my business after I had read “The New Relationship Marketing” by Mari Smith.

How did I become interested in Relationship Marketing?
I have always had an interest in human relationships and especially human behavior. That’s why I studied social science in the first place. As a marketer I came more aware of the terminology “relationship marketing” when I started to work for Mari Smith (one of the top social media strategist in this industry). When her book came out “The New Relationship Marketing” I realized that this was going to be important for the long-term. I mean, the core of the book is all about “adding value to others first” and “always be ready to help others first”. I think that’s one of the things that people would recognize about me. I never think about the money when I serve my clients. My main motivator is to help them the best I can. If they are successful, then I am successful. That’s how it works in relationship marketing.
Is relationship marketing relevant for small businesses? Or is it only relevant for big businesses? Or only for certain types of businesses?
I think we are all in the business of relationship marketing. Without relationships no business can survive – large or small. It’s important to understand the core of relationships. As we see marketing shift from push to pull, it’s now more important than ever to know what your target group, your clients, customers want. You need to know their problems or desires. Those insights start from putting the relationship first! Listen to what people talk about and learn! With social media this social buzz has become more transparent and we can check now what others are saying about our business. That gives us the opportunity to engage in the conversation, respond and learn from feedback.
How can a small business owner start with relationship marketing?
You should start by knowing exactly what you have to offer. What exactly is the value you add to the market place? Why should people do business with you? From thereon you can start sharing content that positions you as the expert in a certain market and at the same time adds tons of value to people who come across your content. Connect with other influencers and work on awareness, likeability and trustworthiness. Focus on the long-term and make sure people know you, like you and trust you. That’s the secret of relationship marketing success!
What do I do when I don’t work?
I have a small garden at home where I grow some vegetables. I spend time with my wife and kids. I’m also a very fanatic cyclist, although I haven’t done that for some time now. I’m planning on supporting the local football club with their football training. My son plays football and I help him as much as I can. I also love to support my kid’s at school now and then. In my free time I love to train myself as designer. I attend online workshops and experiment with new design tools. So, lot’s of things to do.
On which social media can you find me? Which one is my favorite?
I’m on Facebook as a person and as a Facebook page , LinkedIn , Twitter @juanflx, YouTube , Google+ , Instagram and Pinterest. My favorite social platform definitely is Facebook. There’s no other platform like it. It’s very easy to connect with friends and family and use it for business as well. I love Facebook pages and especially the marketing capabilities of fan pages.
What is my philosophy in business and life?
Always be grateful for all the successes you have. Be a leader by serving others. Be open to new experiences and try not to judge others. Keep things simple.
B.Slim is a project that I’m really proud of
I’m very proud of my latest project B.Slim “Champion Healthy Snacking”. This is a project to support local health care prevention program, managed by the local government in Amersfoort. I’ve created their Facebook page, set up their photo contest and run their Facebook promotions – ads. The photo contest is very successful and supports a very good cause: to prevent children from snacking too much! We are doing this together with FrieslandCampina – the biggest player in the Dutch Dairy market. Here’s the link to the B.Slim Facebook page.
What would be my best tip for other small business owners?
Focus! Focus on one thing and be the best you can and work on it for the long-term. Vision yourself over 5 years. What do you need to do today to become the person and business you want to be? Work on that vision and never give up. We all have our struggles now and then. If it was easy to be a business owner, everyone would do it. But it is not. Know where you are going and take it from there, step by step.
